A story about
Love Beyond Brokeness
Marcus grew up not having much knowledge of his birth father and had little contact with his mother who was incarcerated for drug consumption. He was brought up by his grandmother throughout his growing up years. However, an unfortunate event happened and he was admitted into Gracehaven.
The Salvation Army Gracehaven is a children’s home for young people who require care, porotection and rehabilitation due to a lack of parental supervision, risk behaviors or family breakdowns.
When Marcus first entered Gracehaven, he was easily triggered by his surroundings. “I had low self-esteem and had few friends because of trust issues,” he shared. “I felt that nobody cared about me and I was alone. I didn’t see the need to be a good boy”
Mr Augustine Tee, Deputy Director, Residential Services at The Salvation Army, journeyed with Marcus while he was in Gracehaven. “I encouraged Marcus and counselled him that he couldn’t change his past, but he had his bare hands to create his own future and no one could do that for him.” recalled Mr Tee.
With each word of encouragement and care, the staff and care team from Gracehaven instilled hope in Marcus’ heart. Soon after, he felt a renewed sense of purpose and began to spend more time in his studies and being there for his friends.
I shared with him that even if he did not have his birth parents with him, he had many other people who cared for him. Like the staff at Gracehaven, and even the uncles and aunties in the church community!
“Without Gracehaven’s intervention in my life, I don’t think I will become who I am today!” exclaimed Marcus.
Today, Marcus is 24 years old. Not only has he graduated from Temasek Polytechnic, he is also motivated and working towards his goals in life. Marcus is also known to be a reliable and wise friend whom his friends would often turn to for advices. Marcus remains grateful to his grandmother for her care and they share a close bond to this day.
